Norway plans to ban construction of new mining centers

Norway's Labour Party government has announced plans to introduce a temporary ban on the construction of new data centers for cryptocurrency mining that use energy-intensive Proof-of-Work systems, Reuters reports

If the proposed rule is approved, it will take effect in autumn 2025 and will aim to preserve electricity generation capacity for more productive industries

"Cryptocurrency mining requires a lot of energy and creates virtually no jobs or revenue for the local community," said Minister of Digitalization Karianne Tung, adding that this step reflects "the government's clear intention to restrict cryptocurrency mining in Norway as much as possible"
